This is a first-person platformer in which you play as a frog who has been captured in which your mission is to break free and reach freedom aka a pond! This project was part of a one-month project in which I was a part of a team of 4 to create a simple game using Unity. The game features unique frog jumping mechanics as well as a point system you can add to by catching flies. Sadly, for now, I do not have the executable file available to download, but I will update this page when I get a hold of it!
The Leap of Freedom
Development
Development for this project was very rapid as we only had a month to complete all of the game elements. For the game, I was tasked with level design, modeling, and lighting design. I created over dozens of 3D models for the game and put them all together in the Unity editor to make the level design and platform structure. Lastly, I created lighting elements to create a mood and atmosphere. I also helped in scripting here and there, specifically, the script to manage calculating score. Overall, this game is short and sweet and has a whole lot of personality!
Design
When creating “The Leap of Freedom” we thought that a platformer game from the view of a frog would be a very creative and interesting gameplay loop. Frogs tend to jump more forward than upward so we fashioned the gameplay around this concept. When you jump, you shoot forward as well as up to create this frog like “leap”. The platform design is created with this mechanic in mind. Of course, in a platformer game, you have to have collectables! We have 3D modeled flies that the player can collect for 10 points each. This gives players an additional goal other than making it to the other end of the course. When you fall off of the platforms you get reset back to the start of the level to retry your attempt to reach freedom. We designed the art to be low poly for the sake of a cartoony yet simplistic style that looks appealing. Overall, this game is a cute little experience to see what it is like to jump like a frog in a colorful environment!
